Making copies of a photograph was not even possible until AFTER 1850. Americans for the first time saw vivid and horrific images. Many of the photos surviving the war were faded, folded, marred, wrinkled or scratched and most were either over or under exposed. This is a first generation black and white print of a digital document created from national archives. The original black and white photos were taken sometimes over 140 years ago when color photographs didn’t even exist.

of a BRITISH LIVENS (MORTAR) FOR PROJECTING GAS BOMBS. Prior to the invention of the Livens Projector, chemical weapons had
been delivered either by “cloud attacks” or chemical-filled shells fired from howitzers. Cloud attacks were made
by burying gas filled cylinder tanks just beyond the attacker’s trenches, and then opening valves on the tanks when
the wind was right.
•There is a photo of a TYPICAL GAS SHELL BURSTING. Chlorine (which was often used) is an asphyxiating
gas that causes acute bronchitis with gradual suffocation and those who initially survived, a considerable dose, generally
died from pneumonia. People seldom died when the asphyxiating gas passed over them, if they masked quickly enough, and those
who breathed in small amounts of the gas often recovered quickly.
